Flashback Friday: Taylor Swift "1989" Track by Track

For today’s Flashback Friday I’m giving you a track by track of Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album, 1989. If you haven’t yet heard Taylor’s new album I’m telling you right now to make a point to do so. The album sees Taylor depart from her country roots and debut a new pop sound which sounds amazing. The new more electrified sound suits Taylor’s voice just as much as country and there isn’t one song on the album I haven’t listened to about a million times since buying it.

Still, for those of you who haven’t yet listened to the album (or those of you who have) I’m going to be breaking down the 13 main tracks you get on the album. Of course if you purchased the deluxe edition you would have received three bonus tracks as well as three voice memos of Taylor’s song writing process.

1.     Welcome to New York
Not only are we being welcomed to New York in the album’s opening track, we are also being welcomed to Taylor’s new sound. With its catchy tune the song is the perfect introduction to Taylor’s first official pop album.

2.     Blank Space
Scheduled to be the second single off 1989, Blank Space is a beautiful song with a lot of fun sounds and enjoyable lyrics. A perfect song for that new crush you’ve been nursing.

3.     Style
Style has, well, style! The tune is heavy on the bass, but add that to the super catchy chorus and Taylor’s incredible lyrics, this track will never go out of style.

4.     Out of the Woods
Released as the first promotional single off the album, Out of the Woods has an almost haunting sort of tone and a very repetitive chorus. The repetitiveness is one of the things that make this song one of my favourites off the album, as is the great message behind the song.

5.     All You Had to Do Is Stay
This song actually reminds me of some pop tracks from the early naughties. It’s got a great tempo and fairly simple lyrics which are easy to remember and make for a fantastic track.

6.     Shake It Off
Not one afraid to tell it like it is; Taylor really makes a point with the lead single off her newest album. Shake It Off is truly a track about not caring what others think about you, and that if someone does say something negative then you just need to shake it off and focus on the happier things in life.

7.     I Wish You Would
The half-way point on Taylor’s incredible album is the incredible track I Wish You Would. This song has a great guitar track and some fun lyrics. A perfect song for when you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend, but realise you made a mistake and just wish they would come back.

8.     Bad Blood
Easily one of the catchiest songs on the album, bad blood has some of the deepest lyrics on the album. Lyrics like ‘still got scars on my back from your knife’ have this song in my top three favourites off 1989. Even my sister who didn’t want to listen to the album heard this song and instantly fell in love with it. Perfect track Taylor!

9.     Wildest Dreams
A song with an easy tempo, Wildest Dreams is simply a gorgeous song. It shows off Taylor’s vocals in this new sound perfectly and has very enjoyable lyrics.

10.  How You Get the Girl
Another of the catchiest songs on the album, How You Get the Girl uses repetition to its advantage with its verses paralleling each other to create a perfect track. This is one I’ve been singing non-stop in my car... and my room...

11.  This Love
The first true ballad on the album, This Love is a beautiful song which works to show off Taylor’s vocals as well as her song writing skills. The lyrics provide us with a beautiful message about a love that no matter what is strong enough to always come back to you.

12.  I Know Places
I Know Places is probably one of the tracks on the album that is the furthest from Taylor’s old sound that you could get, and it is still a perfect song. Taylor’s vocals are truly shown off in this song, and with its catchy lyrics and easy tempo it makes for an easy listen.

13.  Clean
Choosing to finish off her album as many artists do, Clean is a gorgeous ballad with fantastic lyrics and a great beat. Its haunting lyrics and enjoyable beat is what makes this song such a fun one to sing to.

Well there you have it. 13 amazing songs from Taylor Swift’s 1989. Of course if you purchased the deluxe editions you would have gotten some bonus tracks.

14.  Wonderland
15.  You Are In Love
16.  New Romantics

You also would have gotten three voice memos of Taylor’s song writing process. This is something a little different and I’ve only listened to them once each, but it was interesting to hear how Taylor began to pull together these incredible tracks.

17.  I Know Places (Piano/Vocal)
18.  I Wish You Would (Track/Vocal)
19.  Blank Space (Guitar/Vocal)

What’s your favourite song on the album? Are you like my sister and love Bad Blood? Or is one of the ballads your favourite? Let me know in the comments below!

Stay random!
