Pretty Little Liars 5x01 Recap

OMG WTF right??!! If this was your reaction to the summer premiere of ABC Family's hit show raise your hand. It was definitely mine!

But before we go any further, what does everyone think of Pretty Little Liars being renewed for a season 6... AND a season 7? I say good on them for this vote of confidence from the network. But another two seasons of being tortured by A? The show better do something big to ensure their viewers don't get bored along the way (Lost anyone?).

And now onto the recap. Just a little warning that this blog will contain spoilers for the Pretty Little Liars episode entitled 'EscApe from New York', so if you haven't seen it yet don't read any further!!

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

Okay, so first let's back track a little and talk about where we were going into the premiere.

The season 4 finale 'A is for Answers' was chock-full of revelations about the night Alison disappeared and gave us an answer to whether or not Spencer (Troian Bellisario) was the one to hit her over the head. As we saw in that episode it wasn't Spencer and though we still don't know who it was, we do know that Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) was the one to bury Ali, and all because she was trying to protect someone. The finale ended with a daring chase on the rooftops where Ezra (Ian Harding) was shot by A.

Wow. And just when we thought things couldn't get any crazier, the season 5 premiere happened.

During the intense 45 minutes we discovered new secrets, saw some familiar faces and learnt of sinister plots. First and foremost... Ezra is alive!! After a scare on the surgery floor Mr. Fitz pulled through and it looks like he's going to be okay. But A is still after him, leading the girls to make a risky plan to get A out of the hospital.

Aria (Lucy Hale) remains at the hospital while Alison (Sasha Pieterse), Spencer, Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) make their way to a playground where they are confronted by not one, not two, but a whole group of people in black hoodies and scary masks. Luckily NYPD broke it up before anything serious could happen, but that didn't stop me from getting goosebumps after Alison is asked by A "wanna play?".

Lucas (Brendan Robinson) is back! Yep that's right. After being absent for the entire fourth season, everyone's favourite troubled teen is back, and this time it looks like he's working with Mona (Janel Parrish) willingly. The question is, what are they up to? We didn't get any answers in this episode, but after watching the promo for next week it looks like we might get a peek at what #MonasArmy is all about.

And speaking of secrets, what is Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) hiding? The eldest Hastings sister knows something that her father seems keen for her to keep a secret. But will she?

CeCe (Vanessa Ray) and Shana (Aeriel Miranda) have both left the building. Finally. I don't know about any of you, but I never particularly liked either character. CeCe adopted Alison's alter ego Vivian Darkbloom and took off out of the country, on the run for killing Detective Wilden. It was revealed that Shana is A and had become so in order to protect Jenna from Ali, though before she could do anything she is killed by Aria who shoves her off a stage. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Shana is gone (no one even liked her anyway!) but that fall seemed pretty short to me. I suppose she hit her head on the music stand on the way down? Give me your thoughts on what you thought about Shana's death in the comments below.

That's pretty much the summer premiere all wrapped up. Next week we see Alison return to Rosewood where it won't be all sunshine and rainbows. Despite the girls' belief that it's all over now that Shana is gone, A is still out there. And if not A then Mona is definitely up to something. No I don't think that girls are safe just yet. As my sister put it, "did you not see how many freaking A's there were in that playground!!".

So what did you guys think of the season 5 opener? Did it live up to your expectations? And what do you think of the show being renewed for another two seasons? Do you think it's going to go too far? Let me know what you think!!

Keep an eye on the blog next Wednesday for the recap of episode two 'Whirly Girl'.

Stay random!
~ Jenna
